Sussex is an hour and a half down the A23 or the A22 from our Holborn studio and we take on projects there of a size that justifies the visits a hand-applied finish needs. Most recently that meant a full bathroom refurbishment in Willingdon, near Eastbourne: a complete strip-out, new drainage and re-screed, then a tadelakt-style finish to the walls and a microcement floor, with the owners' own brassware set against it. The client's review is below.
The coast brings its own conditions. Bathrooms in seaside homes see salt air and heavy ventilation and sealed mineral surfaces with no grout lines take that better than tile. Inland, the Sussex Weald and the Downs are full of flint, brick and timber-framed cottages that need finishes that breathe, which is where our lime and clay plasters come in. And Brighton and Hove's Regency and Victorian terraces suit Venetian plaster in the tall rooms that were built to show a wall off.
Because the distance is real, we plan Sussex work around it: the colour agreed on a sample panel in your own light before work starts, a single survey, then the coats scheduled in consecutive days rather than spread across weeks.
